Projects
An important Grade 1 Listed Building with many surviving original features and an interesting history was empty and redundant after being vacated by the Church. The project sought a new and viable use for the house which respected its character and historic importance.
East Denton Hall
Date - May 2021
Client - Private Developer
Location - Newcastle-upon-Tyne
Brief - Provide a Heritage Statement and professional advice on the conversion of this Jacobean House to a residential property.

The property
A substantial and remarkably intact early house dating from 1622 with an interesting history as a private mansion, farmhouse, family residence for a wealthy and influential family and ultimately an ecclesiastical use as a residence for the Bishop of Newcastle.

The developing project
During the development of the project it became apparent that the initial brief for a single private dwelling was unsustainable in this location and a review of the potential for the building suggested that a change of use to sensitively adapt the building to a care home would be more financially viable. This proposal gained the support in principle of the SPAB and Newcastle City Council subject to an appropriate, detailed and considerate treatment of the building fabric and historic qualities.
